Our customer supplied us with CAD data to produce two rapid prototype models. They required demonstration models of machines from their factory. The dimensions given were of the outside faces only, we allowed for a nominal wall thickness and the models were manufactured from SLA parts. This process was chosen as the models were to be hollow, and hard wearing.

To have machined these from solid material would not have been cost effective. Once the SLA parts were complete, our model makers hand finished these by rubbing down the surfaces, this blends the build lines created in production and leaves us with a higher standard surface ready for painting.

The model machines were to be illuminated from within. To create this effect, the window areas of the models were highly polished until they were almost transparent, then sprayed with a thin layer of black tint. LED’s were fitted inside the models behind a diffuser; this was used to achieve a uniform glow from the lights.

To complete the model, the remaining surfaces were sprayed green to match the original machines, and a base was produced to mount it on. Magnets were used to position the model on its base, along with a micro switch. When the model is handled at exhibitions, the micro switch turns the models lights on when replaced.

Exhibition and display models can be required for various reasons. They are ideal for illustrating the scale of an item against its current surroundings, demonstrating the workings of products or for eye-catching impact at displays using large scale models.
