Prototype Model Using ABS

Creating a Prototype Model using ABS plastic

We are often requested to produce one-off models or prototypes. In many cases these are usually for display at exhibitions or in some cases for use when the customer is applying for a patent on a new product and needs to be able to demonstrate a working version of the prototype. One of our most recent projects that we completed was a prototype model using ABS plastic and was for a design of a multi product waste recycling bin. Our client supplied us with an approximate design for the model. We then worked together to enhance and refine the design. Once a final design had been agreed upon we could start manufacture. These pieces were attached using an MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) solvent. This solvent can also be used in the preparation of gluing, but also acts as a bonding agent itself by melting the ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) to create an adhesive.

Each “bin” had it’s own lid, and both the front face and lid were laser engraved with the material for which the bin was to be used, i.e. paper, glass etc.

To finish the model, miniature dummy castor wheels were attached to the base to give the effect of wheelie bins.

These type of designs as you can see are useful for and much easier to explain products when a patent is being applied for. They also help the customer to see what their vision will look like and they can make any changes to it if necessary before the patent is set in place.

JH May are experts in this type of model making and have a team of technicians who are experienced in all disciplines which enable us to make products quickly and effectively.
