Turbine Model – CNC Machining and Rapid Prototyping

alst321

We have recently completed an in-depth model of a turbine for use as a teaching aid.

Our team of model makers produced the model to a typically tight deadline ready for Shipment to models final destination in Asia.

Our client provided us with full size CAD files, these were then scaled down to 1:17 scale in order for us to produce. STL files for use in manufacturing SLS prototypes and 3D CNC machining.

As the turbine replica will be disassembled and reassembled daily for demonstrations in the power plant, SLS prototypes were chosen for their strength and durability properties in order for the model to withstand years of being handled and broken down frequently.

Wind turbine design

The rotor was CNC turned from high density model-board, designed to illustrate the unique construction of the fan itself, with blades laser cut from aluminium and inserted. This rotor was made in two sections, a three-quarter section and a quarter section to enable our client to separate the pieces for explanation purposes.

The model, measuring at just over half a metre in each direction, was then highly polished and painted to our customer’s specifications, and hand fitted together to ensure the ease of assembly by the final user.

A clear Perspex case was made to house the turbine, and a custom-made flight case produced for protection during the shipping to our customer.
