Size varies enormously from project to project, the smallest we have produced is a model Ford Ka approximately 1.5 inches in length, the largest being our most recent project of famous heads measuring 4 metres high and 3 metres wide.
This latest project is an imitation of Mount Rushmore, and owing to the World Cup season Nike has replaced the presidents with four renowned England football players. The faces of Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Theo Walcott and James Milner were 3D laser scanned in order to create files for us to use for machining.
The heads were CNC machined from polystyrene, each head being made up of several sections due to the size. The lightweight property of polystyrene made it an ideal material for these models as the faces were to be mounted up high, and is also very cost efficient which had to be considered due to the large amount of material to be used.
Before sending to our client each head had small finishing touch-up jobs to be done after machining, these were done by hand by our model makers, using foam to fill in any spaces between the sections and carefully rubbed down.
As each head was completed a designated courier delivered them to our client, these had to be transported very carefully due to the polystyrene being susceptible to breaking off in pieces if it was caught.
Once the model heads reached their final destination they create an impressive structure located on the West Cromwell Road site near Earls Court. This advertising space is known as the “Golden Mile” in the advertising industry, stretching 75 metres across and 16 metres high. With each face offering 83 square metres of space, the interlinked billboards create the longest advertising face in the UK. Being situated in such a sought after area near the M4, this stunning 3D billboard will attract a large amount of attention both from traffic and pedestrians.
The faces will be at Cromwell Road until June 20th, unfortunately as the models were already being produced several months ago, the decision of Theo Walcott not making the final team was too last minute for any changes in the billboard.
