Architectural models are often requested by councils when buildings in the area are to be built or modified.

We have recently completed a model of a block of apartments. Made on a scale of 1:100, we used architectural elevation drawings from the architect to design CAD files for us to manufacture from.

The height of these apartments must be in relation to the existing surrounding buildings. This model will enable the council, residents and local business owners to view how the proposed building will finally look before planning permission is considered.

The various levels of the architectural model building were built up using blocks of Ureol, with pieces of Perspex sheet cut to size for the building’s façade. A sturdy base was also made from Ureol and a clear Perspex cover to protect the model during handling and transit.

Many various techniques were applied by our modelmakers, these included using miniature plastic square rod to create a picket fence, vacuum formed corrugated plastic sheet with uprights added to produce a standard wooden fence and transfers to replicate window and door details. To complete the model the base then had a road painted onto it, green flock used to emulate grass and model trees and vehicles were also added.
