We are often requested to produce one-off models or prototypes, these are usually for exhibitions or for use when the customer is applying for a patent on a new product. The most recent prototype we have completed was for a design of waste recycling bins. Our client supplied us with an approximate design for the model, once a final design had been agreed upon we could start manufacture.

We created the main body of the model using ABS, a type of plastic known for its durability and strength so the model will not be easily damaged.
Nine separate sections were then formed within this main body by laser cut pieces of coloured Perspex, this resulted in a striking appearance as Perspex is available in large range of vivid colours.

These pieces were attached using an MEK solvent. This solvent can also be used in the preparation of gluing, but also acts as a bonding agent itself by melting the ABS to create an adhesive.
Each “bin” had it’s own lid, and both the front face and lid were laser engraved with the material for which the bin was to be used, i.e. paper, glass etc.
To finish the model, miniature dummy castor wheels were attached to the base to give the effect of wheelie bins.
